The best version of this drive is not a race to Half Moon Bay. Give the fog room to move, stop at one or two coastal viewpoints and arrive with enough daylight for the beach or Main Street.

    Leave San Francisco toward Pacifica

    Use the coast route when the point is scenery. If fog is dense or time is tight, compare the inland approach instead of forcing Highway 1.

    Choose Devil’s Slide or a short overlook

    Devil’s Slide Trail follows a former section of Highway 1 and gives a car-free coastal walk. One planned stop is better than several unsafe roadside pauses.

    Coast

    Continue through Montara and Moss Beach

    These small communities reward a slow drive. Check tide and access conditions before making tide pools the center of the day.

    Choose beach time or downtown

    Half Moon Bay State Beach works for an open-air finish; Main Street works when wind or fog makes a café and walk more appealing.

A small price difference is easy to lose by doubling back along Highway 1. Compare stations in southern San Francisco or Daly City against the Pacifica and Half Moon Bay options, then choose the one that stays on the natural line of travel.
